Shanna Wighton RMT

Shanna Wighton RMTHi, I’m Shanna Wighton, one of the registered massage therapists at the Metro Massage Therapy Clinic. I’ve been with Metro since 2008.

In 2007 I graduated from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy here in Victoria. The WCCMT is known throughout North America as a school with some of the highest standards and training in the world. The full-time, 2 ½ year, 3000-hour program of study at the WCCMT included 500 hours working in the student clinic and at various outreaches in the community. As students we were taught to treat over 80 specific conditions; everything from tendonitis to rheumatoid arthritis to multiple sclerosis.

Some of the conditions that I have treated recently are: Chronic pain, tension headaches, migraines, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, TMJ disfunction, rotator cuff injuries, and general neck and shoulder issues from computer work.

Before training to become a massage therapist, I earned a Child and Youth Care Degree from Malaspina University-College and worked as a counselor for youth at risk. Throughout my work and school life, my focus has been to help people enhance their quality of life.

As a massage therapist I believe that the patient is the expert. They have the most knowledge about their condition. My role is to give suggestions to help the patient formulate a health care plan, and to help them achieve their goals.

I strongly believe in treating holistically. I look at all aspects of a patient’s health and may make suggestions for self-care. I use a very wide range of tools to treat patients. Myofascial release, cranio-sacral, trigger point therapy, and deep tissue are some of the specific massage techniques that I use.

Every patient is different, and everyone needs a different combination of techniques. I never treat the same way twice. What worked for a patient in a previous treatment might not work in the same way during the next day’s treatment.

I work as a massage therapist because I enjoy meeting new people and taking on new challenges. As a RMT, I have the amazing opportunity to create positive change in another person’s life.

I look forward to meeting you!
